Why Learn Languages?

There are many benefits to learning another language, including enhanced employability skills, cultural awareness and empathy, travel opportunities, and speaking more than one language has been proven to delay the onset of dementia.

Modern Language learning focusses on 4 main skill areas - Listening & Talking, Reading & Writing.

But in Modern Languages it's not just about the language skills of Reading, Listening, Talking & Writing, it's also about all the other transferable skills you can acquire, skills which will prepare you for the world of work beyond school - improving literacy skills, listening skills, presentation skills, critical thinking skills, problem-solving, working with others, working to a deadline, sharing ideas, being resilient, independent learning skills, analysis of language, being responsible, supporting others.

How to improve

• Listening

I can improve my listening by:

• reading my vocabulary lists out loud
• recording my vocabulary lists onto tape and listening to them to see if I know what the words mean
• asking someone else to read the lists out
• downloading mp3 files and listening to them
• reading the questions carefully
• checking my answers make sense
• listening for key words
• trying to work out how words sound

I can improve my talking by:

• being more confident
• using a French accent and trying to pronounce things properly
• practising speaking French at home
• always listening carefully in class when practising how to say things
• use Quizlet and Linguascope to hear correct pronunciation
• record yourself and listen back to it

I can improve my reading by:

• reading back through worksheets in my jotter to check understanding
• using the French/Spanish reading resources in school
• practising looking up words I don't know in a dictionary
• reading the headlines on Yahoo.fr/Yahoo.es or Google.fr/Google.es
• making use of a dictionary
• reading questions carefully and the text carefully
• using the context to guess unknown words
• finding the part of the passage that answers the question
• looking at the number of marks per question and making sure I give the right amount of information

I can improve my writing by:

• writing out vocabulary lists repeatedly until my spelling is accurate
• writing out longer passages, trying to join sentences together
• trying to put different tenses into my written work, e.g. past, present and future
• always checking spelling, accents, tenses, adjective agreements, plurals, masculine/feminine
• SACAWAC spelling (Study And Cover And Write And Check)
• always checking my work makes sense
